Move over electric: Are natural gas vehicles the future of cars?

CS Monitor -- As America attempts to harness the power of natural gas to its fullest—and to find a non-export-related use for plentiful supplies—there appears to be a shopping spree for natural gas vehicles under way.

From seminars to state commitments to purchase natural gas vehicles, the idea is suddenly a bipartisan phenomenon with more and more states jumping on the bandwagon.

Most notably, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper has announced that his state, in coalition with 21 others, will purchase as many as 10,000 vehicles running on compressed natural gas (CNG) annually—providing that US automakers will actually build them.

According to Oklahoma governor Mary Fallin—who has been implemental in trying to convince automakers of the benefits of producing more CNG vehicles--more than 100 car deale

The beginning of the automotive age saw gasoline, electric, and steam. Maybe going 'Back to the Future' will produce garbage powered vehicles, or steam powered by throwing wood or coal into the firebox.

The prime question is will the natural gas vehicle of the future use compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquified natural gas (LNG) or will we see a group of vehicles using CNG for local delivery, commuting, bus routes and other local transportation uses but see a different group of vehicles using LNG for transportation uses beyond the users local area such as long haul truckers, railroad engines, heavy equipment operators and those consumers who want or need to go more than 150 or so miles on a single fill up.

The fuel cost at that time was the equivalent of 50 cents a gallon, but the local Shell dealer removed the CNG because our city was installing there own. Public cost at the the new city CNG station jumped to well over a dollar. Other refill locations were sparse and primarily for fleet vehicles. We had piped in natural gas in our home,but the cost of a home CNG compressor and additional electricity used to compress it influenced me to buy a use electric vehicle instead. In 2011 we took delivery of a new Nissan Leaf and are able to charge on a regular 110v plug for 2-3 hours at night for most of our daily driving. It works more efficiently for us than compressing NG.

The cost has to come down before the public will be receptive to buying NG vehicles.

Maybe, Maybe Not! As more and more vehicles are built to use natural gas OR converted over to natural gas, more natural gas will be used and the price could go up. Don't expect natural gas to stay low for very long, the trend for fuel prices is always up and up more! Many more fueling stations are needed to fuel those CNG vehicles once they are built and sold. Expect to fill more with Natural Gas as it is less dense and has less BTU's than Gasoline or Diesel and will not get the same amount of miles. Honda has a CNG vehicle on the market for quite a while now – Honda Civic GX. Get a refill kit for the home natural gas line and fill up there. If you are on the traveling, know where your fill up stations are and plan accordingly. To all those that think a CNG or a Hydrogen vehicle is a bomb waiting to happen. Why haven't gasoline vehicles exploded on the roads? It's just as explosive as CNG or Hydrogen or more so! Do you really think the government would allow bombs on the road? Engage brain and think about it! Big Oil continues to sell fuel and natural gas on the world market for higher prices, there will be NO price reduction for the cost of fuel or natural gas IN the US. 'Coming out of the closet' Fred's lousy, smoke and mirrors, lack of jobs, dog and pony show and in the crapper economy, the jobs are Not here. Fred's economy is not improving but continues to hurt the population and the job numbers continue to be down – no matter how smoooooth talking Fred spins those numbers! People will still drive and buy fuel no matter what but it sure helps to have a job too! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII!

CNG will burn cleaner than gasoline and not need the ethanol. Oh, no, what will the ethanol producers do? All of those layoffs and subsidies gone.
